Inquiry urged on Gaza shooting

by Acting Head of News at Channel 4 and others | The Times | 14 May 2003

Sir, The Israeli Foreign Minister, Silvan Shalom, arrives in London on Wednesday and meets Jack Straw the next day. As the main news broadcasters in the UK we wish to express our outrage at the shooting of journalists by the Israeli Army.

Twelve days ago we lost one of our most highly respected filmmakers when James Miller was shot through the neck as he filmed in the Gaza Strip (report, May 3). James and his team were wearing flak jackets clearly marked as press and waving a white flag.

James is the eighth journalist to be killed in the last couple of years in Israel. Many more have been shot and injured.

We call on the Israeli Government to ensure that there is a thorough and open investigation into Jamesís death. And we trust that when the two Foreign Ministers meet on Thursday this issue will be high on their agenda.

Yours faithfully,
DOROTHY BYRNE,
Acting Head of News and Current Affairs,
Channel 4,
PETER HORROCKS,
Head of Current Affairs, BBC,
NICK POLLARD,
Head of Sky News,
STEWART PURVIS,
Chief Executive, ITN,

May 13.
